Start where you are

Not sure if it is trauma, stress, or something you should push through?

In Nepal and globally, many survivors wait years — because of stigma, fear of reliving memories, or belief that others suffered more. This explorer is not a diagnosis. It helps you reflect and choose a sensible next step in Kathmandu or online.

Which sounds most like you right now?

Clearing up common beliefs

Seeking help is not the same as being 'paagal'

In Nepal, mental health care is often avoided because people fear labels like madness or weak character. National surveys show many adults with distress never seek care for fear of shame. Confidential psychotherapy is a professional space — not public gossip. You choose what to share.

Trauma therapy is confidential and paced

Licensed psychologists work under confidentiality rules explained in your first session. You are not pushed to tell your story to relatives, employers, or the therapist faster than your nervous system can tolerate. Safety and pacing come first.

Trauma in Nepal is more common than people admit

Research after the 2015 earthquake found PTSD in roughly one in five survivors — years later, symptoms still persisted for many. Civil conflict, gender-based violence, accidents, medical trauma, and migration stress also affect Nepalis at home and abroad. You are not alone, and help exists in Kathmandu and online.

Waiting vs. seeking paced help

Globally, effective trauma treatments exist — yet stigma and fear keep many from starting. In Nepal, research after the 2015 earthquake and among conflict-affected communities shows symptoms can persist for years without support.

What delay often looks like

  • Wait until you 'break' or collapse
  • Compare yourself to others who suffered more
  • Rely only on prayer, healers, or silence
  • Assume time alone will erase memory
  • Fear therapy means reliving everything at once

What trauma-informed care offers

  • Seek support when daily life is affected
  • Build coping skills before deep processing
  • Confidential care that respects Nepali context
  • Trauma-focused therapy and phased CPTSD work
  • Online sessions for Nepal and diaspora clients

Reflective checklist — tap what resonates

Select any that apply. This does not diagnose PTSD or complex trauma — it helps suggest a useful next step.

Only a qualified clinician can diagnose PTSD or complex trauma. This tool helps you explore and decide your next step. If you are in immediate danger, use emergency or crisis services — we are not an emergency line.

Trauma can leave you on edge, numb, or disconnected long after the event. At Bhatta Psychotherapy, therapy is paced and confidential — you set the speed, and we do not push you to relive painful memories before you are ready.

When is the right time to seek help?

You do not need to wait for collapse or a diagnosis. The WHO notes that distress after trauma is common, but support matters when symptoms interfere with daily life — in Nepal, stigma still keeps many from care they deserve.

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, or strong reactions to reminders
  • Feeling numb, disconnected, or avoiding people and places
  • Always on edge, poor sleep, or unexplained body tension
  • Childhood neglect, abuse, or repeated harm (complex trauma)
  • After earthquake, accident, conflict, loss, or violence — even years later
  • Shame or fear of being labeled stops you from getting help
  • Work, relationships, or parenting are clearly suffering

Trauma in Nepal — you are not alone

Studies after the 2015 earthquake estimated PTSD in roughly one in five survivors, with symptoms lasting years for many. Conflict-affected communities, gender-based violence, accidents, and migration stress also leave lasting marks. National mental health research shows high stigma — fear of being labeled — yet effective trauma-focused psychotherapy is available in Kathmandu and online.

Who this is for

  • Flashbacks, nightmares, or feeling on edge (hypervigilance)
  • Numbness, dissociation, or difficulty trusting others
  • Complex trauma from childhood or long-term stress
  • Grief, loss, or abuse — you want a safe place to heal
  • Earthquake, conflict, or diaspora stress — past or present

Common questions

Is trauma therapy available in Kathmandu and online?
Yes. Bhatta Psychotherapy offers trauma-informed care in person at Anurag Marg and secure video sessions for clients across Nepal and the diaspora.
What is the difference between PTSD and complex trauma (CPTSD)?
PTSD often follows a identifiable shocking event — re-experiencing, avoidance, and hyperarousal. Complex PTSD (ICD-11) adds longer-term patterns such as emotional dysregulation, shame, and relationship difficulty, often after repeated childhood or relational trauma. Both are treatable; complex trauma may need a longer, phased course.
Will therapy force me to relive everything?
No. Trauma-informed care is paced — stabilization and coping skills come first. You control how much you share and when deeper processing happens.
Psychiatrist or psychologist for trauma?
We are psychologists offering trauma-focused psychotherapy. We do not prescribe medication. If medicine may be needed, a psychiatrist assesses and prescribes; you can find one yourself or ask us for a referral.
I survived the 2015 earthquake — is it too late to seek help?
No. Research shows PTSD symptoms persisted for many survivors years later. Old trauma can still affect sleep, mood, and relationships — starting support now still helps.
Can I see a healer and a psychologist?
Many Nepalis use faith healers, prayer, or traditional care first. Psychotherapy is helpful when distress continues, daily life suffers, or you want evidence-based tools. The two are not always either/or.
Do you offer EMDR?
We offer trauma-informed therapy including EMDR-informed processing when appropriate and safe. See our EMDR article for an overview.
Is this an emergency service?
No. If you are in immediate danger or having thoughts of ending your life, contact local emergency services or a crisis line in your country. When stable, we can plan trauma-focused care.
