The results were clear. The doctor was unambiguous. You felt better for perhaps two days, and then the same sensation returned and so did the certainty — and now you are also embarrassed about going back.
Health anxiety is persistent fear of having or developing serious illness, which does not resolve with medical reassurance. It is common, treatable, and rarely treated because people take it to the wrong specialist.
Why reassurance stops working
Because reassurance relieves anxiety briefly, and anything that relieves anxiety briefly gets repeated. The relief teaches the system that checking was necessary, so the need to check grows rather than shrinks.
This is why the tenth normal result is less convincing than the first, which makes no logical sense and is entirely predictable.
The symptoms are usually real. Anxiety produces genuine physical sensations — palpitations, tension headaches, digestive problems, dizziness — which are then read as evidence of disease, which increases anxiety, which increases the symptoms.
What maintains it
Searching symptoms online, which reliably surfaces the worst possibility
Body checking — pressing, examining, monitoring pulse or breathing
Repeated reassurance from family, doctors, or the internet
Avoiding medical settings entirely, which is the same problem inverted
Attention narrowed onto one part of the body, which makes sensation more noticeable
The trap with checking
Attention amplifies sensation. Monitoring a heartbeat makes it more noticeable; examining a lump repeatedly makes the area sore and changes it. The checking manufactures the very evidence it was looking for.
CBT for health anxiety has good evidence and looks different from what people expect. It is not about being persuaded that you are healthy — persuasion is the thing that has already failed.
Reducing checking and searching deliberately, and tolerating the anxiety that follows
Agreeing a limit on reassurance-seeking with family, who are usually relieved to have one
Testing predictions rather than debating them
Widening attention away from the monitored area
Treating any underlying anxiety or depression alongside it
One necessary caution
Health anxiety does not make anyone immune to illness. The aim is normal medical care at normal intervals — not no medical care. If something changes materially, it should be checked once, properly.
Frequently asked questions
What is health anxiety?
Persistent fear of having or developing a serious illness that does not resolve with medical reassurance. It was formerly called hypochondria and is common and treatable.
Why does reassurance stop working?
Because relief from reassurance is brief, and the brief relief teaches the system that checking was necessary. Each round strengthens the need for the next, which is why the tenth normal result convinces less than the first.
Are the symptoms imaginary?
No. Anxiety produces genuine physical sensations — palpitations, headaches, digestive problems, dizziness. They are real, and they are being interpreted as disease rather than as anxiety.
Why does checking make it worse?
Attention amplifies sensation, and physical checking can alter the area being checked. The monitoring tends to manufacture the evidence it was searching for.
How is it treated?
CBT for health anxiety has good evidence. It works by reducing checking and reassurance-seeking and testing predictions, rather than by persuading you that you are well — persuasion has usually already failed.
